Choose the right car for your family
Buying a car is a big decision and there are several things to consider, especially if you have a family. We’ve compiled a guide on different types of cars suited for families and what features you should keep an eye out for during your search:
What type of car should you get?
Sedan: If you have a small family of up to 3-4 people and are looking for a car on a budget, a traditional sedan is a great option. Also known as a saloon, these five-seater cars have spacious rear seats enough to comfortably accommodate two adults or three children. Sedans aren’t just less expensive at the outset but are more affordable in the long run thanks to their low fuel usage and lower insurance premiums. Sedans are also known for their smooth steering and firm handling while on the road since they are lower to the road, giving the car a balanced center of gravity. This makes the car easier to maneuver while driving. One of the main setbacks of sedans is that they have a completely enclosed compact trunk space that doesn’t offer much room for cargo.
SUV: Sport Utility Vehicles or commonly known as SUVs, are the most preferred type of cars amongst families in the region. SUVs offer the utmost comfort and cabin space with ample legroom amongst all the family car types and have varying accommodations from 5-9 seats depending on the size. SUVs are also ideal for families looking for cars with more trunk space and they have the ability to tow large loads. Full-sized SUVs with 7 to 9 seats have a third row of seats that are removable or foldable when not in use to make more cargo space, almost the capacity of a small pickup truck. Thanks to the all-wheel-drive system, SUVs are designed for both on and off-road use which provides for a more adventurous ride if needed. With the large tires, elevated platform and suspensions, SUVs account for a more comfortable ride.
Crossover: A crossover, like the name suggests, is a combination of a family sedan and a full-sized SUV. The main difference between an SUV and a crossover is that an SUV has the chassis used by off-road vehicles and trucks which provides a greater ride comfort while driving off-road, whereas a crossover is built on a platform used by regular passenger cars. Also known as compact SUVs, crossovers have ample trunk room with plenty of seating room for 5-8 passengers depending on the size. Crossovers usually have the same ground clearance as an SUV; however, they are built with road driving as their primary purpose and light off-road driving as a second priority. They usually offer better gas mileage compared to SUVs and are more reasonably priced.
What attributes to look for?
Safety rating: Safety trumps everything when buying a car for a family, especially if you have young children. Look for models with a 5-star safety rating and high performance in crash tests. Ask dealers about other features designed specifically with kids in mind. If buying a second-hand car, research extensively on the safety features and ensure you have it checked by a professional to ensure it hasn’t previously been involved in an accident. Also, look if the car has an ample amount of side and side curtain airbags that protect every seat of the car in the event of an accident. Safety is one of the few cases where it’s hard to go overboard. Also, make sure the car you’re getting has ISOFIX car seat attachment available. Most cars come with ISOFIX which is the international standard for attachment points for child safety seats in passenger cars, but it’s always handy to double-check when inspecting the car. More is better, so don’t settle for anything less than the best.
Back seat extras: Make sure the backseat of the car you’re getting has adequate cup holders and pockets and USB connectivity to keep everything organized and within reach for the children in the back seat. Some premium versions of SUVs, crossovers, and family sedans have rear-seat entertainment system screens built into the headrests which provide great entertainment and keep children occupied on long trips.
Space and Storage: Make sure the car you’re getting has enough room for everyone and your goods to travel in safety and comfort. If you have babies or toddlers, look if there is enough space in the rear seats to install more than one car seat or booster seat without it being too overcrowded. Another tip is to make sure there is enough legroom for your children in rear-facing car seats. Look for a car with a big trunk and rear seats designed to fold flat to expand the storage area. This is especially necessary if you carry a large stroller around.
